Living the Moment, Heather Enderby

Leaving the stale smelling office behind her Anne, weary, chose not to pick up her dry cleaning; instead she made her way home. ‘Welcome’, said the doormat. Its irony did not escape her. She crossed the threshold, and, once again felt a sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach. Her flat was empty. ‘I so need someone here.’ There was a letter on the floor. She ripped it open. It was a letter from her landlord. ‘I hereby give notice …. selling the property … one month. She sat on the settee and stared at the coffee table. ‘This is too much,’ s he thought, ‘I’m sinking.’ An hour later she was still staring at the table. She dragged herself into activity, and began flicking through the classifieds.

Sebastian found the flat as per instructions from the estate agent. He put the key in the lock but discovered it was already open. He tentatively pushed the door. He was still reeling from the latest confrontation with his wife. He felt confused, trapped, demoralised, in need of beauty. This had to be the solution: a new life. If he stayed with her the way things were, he would lose what was left of his much eroded self-respect.

Anne, who was sitting on the settee just inside the door, yelped. Sebastian’s entry startled her. She, also, was viewing the flat and had let herself in some ten minutes before.

‘Oh, sorry!’ Sebastian said, equally startled. ‘The estate agent gave me the key. He said the owners were away.’

She composed herself and explained, ‘I’m not the owner. I’m looking round the flat.’ She stopped. His kind voice touched her and, overwhelmed, she found herself crying: ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!’

Sebastian offered her a handkerchief. She felt the warmth in his hand and flinched at it. That passing human touch, like oxygen to a starved fire, left her wanting

‘Here, let me fetch you a drink of water.’ He passed her the glass and perched on the settee opposite.

They sat in silence. He watched her sip at the water. It seemed to help. She looked so soft and sweet. Would that his wife could be so! He felt a desire to reach out for that softness.

Their eyes caught each other’s and held.
